Hi All,

I have never been on a forum before, this is a first. I somehow managed to contract viral meningitis in Nov. '11. Strange given I am way over the middle-age age!  Several months later I was diagnosed with "post viral neuralgia".  A few months later after a second lumbar puncture, symptoms became much worse.  MD prescribed 10 mg of amitriptylene at night and we worked up to 60 mg Cymbalta (now generic) plus 40 mg of Nadolol which is a beta blocker that I have been taking in the morning.  My goal has always been to reach a point where I could come of the meds.  The meds were supposed to help me with neuralgia pain in my head and make life/work manageable.  I have to say the combo really helped for about a year.  Then it seemed like things reached a plateau and neuraglia symtoms were flaring and I just wasn't feeling well.  Because I did not want to take anything more potent and because I am tired of taking chemicals, I decided to start weaning off the Cymbalta. This past Tuesday morning I tried the first 30 mg. in place of the 60.  Tuesday was fine, Wednesday and Thursday especially were so bad I went home from work. My doctor (I now have an MD who is also big on holistic care which seems to be rare and I like her) Yesterday she told me to take a 30 mg and 20 mg of the generic Cymbalta and to work off it slowly.  I have an appointment with her Monday afternoon.   I don't know what are plain old nasty drug withdrawal symptoms verses what is the neuralgia pain.  It feels like neuralgia pain only worse.  I guess I am searching to find out who else out there has been on Cymbalta for neuralgia pain (not to be confused with fibromyalgia) my pain is related to the nerves around my brain.

I am so very discouraged and would really like to hear from anyone that has head neuralgia and has been on Cymbalta for that reason.

Welcome Jen. I am sure there are others who will answer but I thought I might suggest that you do a search for neuralgia pain  on this site and see what others have said in the past.

OK, I got 25 hits.  Click on the word 'search' at the top of the page. Enter the word 'neuropathic'. Slightly to the right where it says 'This Topic" click on that. A drop down menu will appear. Click on "forums"   Then click on the magnifying lens. That should do it. I am also going to see what I can do to post my search for you.

Hi Jen, welcome!

Yes, I had head neuralgia ... Occipital neuralgia ... during the worst of my cymbalta withdrawal.... Ironically, it's prescribed also prescribed treat that condition.... I'm no doctor, but to me it sounds like you're having cymbalta withdrawal effects.... It sounds like you might be tapering off it too fast....you might also be sensitive to the generic....I tried the generic and had an absolutely awful reaction...which is why I quit cymbalta altogether....

I'm glad you've got a good doc who appreciates holistic care, and that you're going to check in with her on Monday....

Please let us know how it goes!
