History:
About 20 years ago, I was in a car crash that change the whole direction in my life. Many can relate to this. Pain, depression.... and a whole gammit of symptoms that was extremely debilitating and frankly boggled the doctors and frustrated me. Two years past and finally someone diagnosed me with PTSD with chronic depression. Onward with the prescriptions. Then, it was Prozac and Trazodone. Drugs prescribed attempt to aid in the symptoms.... not the source of the problem.
Todate, symptoms are worse, prozac is now cymbalta, celebrex for the pain and trazodone to shut me down at night. ~sigh~ Better living through chemicals? I challenge that premise.
I started to investigate my symptoms and the more I learned, I am a classic Fibromyalgia afflicted person. Now what? Do I really need these chemicals in my body? What are the alternatives? More investigation is required. (Yeah internet huh?) Even if you do not have fibromyalgia, what I am presenting here may benefit you.
I've read posts here and many of you are like me. Some kind of trauma to the head/neck and voila, you're in a mess which is confusing and your questions left unanswered. You keep taking the pills because what else can you do. Here is an alternative Im working with myself that just maybe the ticket for you. It may work for some, not others, or patience is required. Nothing is a 'quick fix'.
Get a pen and paper and investigate these items that I've so far learned in really changing the circumstances of your health.
1. Pills/drugs change how your brain functions. So do Binaural Beats and Isochronic Tones. These sounds waves affect your brain. They train your brain to stay in different states within the spectrum of your brain function. You've heard of Alpha, Beta, Delta, Theta waves that affect how you think, feel...etc. Investigate this. This is an alternative to your sadness, anger, frustration and cognitive thinking. I can truly attest, and for many others, listening to these 'entrainments' can uplift you.
Isochronic Tones are the most effective in helping ease your depression and their are many other tones that can help other symptoms. Understand that brain wave therapy is NOT the same as listening to classical music the top 10. Brainwave Isochronic Tones are designed to stimulate specific areas of the brain. Example: You're tired all the time, well Alpha/Beta is the ticket. Anxiety, depression therapy using Isochronic Tones use more of the Theta/ Delta wave lengths to calm and relax.
So, get a set of headphones, sit back and relax, listen.

Then I researched about Fibromyalgia and its causes. Lots of misinformation and confusing articles but what rang true for my was the function of a gland in your brain that can be compromised. It is the hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature, blood pressure and a host of other functions of the body. When it is out of wack, a host of weird symptoms prevail hence diagnosing FM is difficult for western medicine. Healing this gland and strengthening /protecting /correct functioning was my next focus.
Research hypothalamus and amino acids, namely proline, fibromyalgia and an exciting herb I had no idea existed called Ashwagandha. Do your searches with these words together, like.... fibromyalgia and hypothalamus and/or proline and hypothalamus...etc. Ashwagandha and depression...... Learn as much as you can, You are the captain of your own ship. Take the wheel and try something different and listen to your own intuition.
Im learning that weaning myself off of Cymbalta and learning new ways to cope with the multisymptoms of depression, fibromyalgia, etc is a large task that requires patience. Im going through this right now and taking the Ashwagandha, there is no crying, sickness, anxiety or shaking at all. In fact, I feel pretty upbeat. What I am experiencing is the cold sweats and pain but it isn't that bad. Its going to take time to heal the hypothalamus and patience is required. This is uncharted territory for me so I am my own test subject. I've gone down from 60 mg to 30 mg. In a few days I'll start beading (removing little beads from the Cymbalta capsule) to finish the detox.
I hope what I say gives you some encouragement and to learn alternative ways to cope
