    Help with going off Cymbalta

Posted 03 November 2014 - 12:43 PM

I thought I was doing well but these past few weeks have been really difficult emotionally and physically.  I was tested for allergies in the past and didn't have any.  Thanks to the hives I started getting over the summer, I went back to the allergist and apparently I'm allergic to a multitude of things now.  The vestibulitis I had prior to starting Cymbalta 9+ years ago is back (they actually recommend Cymbalta to calm the nerves which misfire pain signals).  My raynauds is the worst it's ever been.  It's like everything related to my autoimmune problem is coming back.  I'm struggling with anger, anxiety, depression, dissatisfaction with life.  I'm torn about what I should do.  I'm asking myself if maybe I was a better person on the cymbalta.  This stinks!

I'm so sorry buntbean, Like you I thought I was doing well, but for the last month I've been feeling awful again too. For me the anxiety is the worst, followed by depression. Just last night I thought maybe I should go back on the Cymbalta but then I said I'm not putting that poison in my body again. Wish I could be more helpful, but I wanted to let you know that you're not alone. This sucks big time!

5 months on cymbalta, scary side effects, to get help and to return the favor if I can.

Buntbean, as Kathy says it sucks.

Usually, week 12 is when it starts getting better, fishinghat said that. It prooved to be right for me. Lasted for a while then back to square one.

Going back on the shit was never an option, I never felt good on it, only made it worse.

Twelve weeks is early to consider going back on something. At least, that is my opinion. Waiting for the six month mark was my goal, before thinking of reinstating on something else.

I hope that you have benzos around to help you through this.
I can not speak for the physical symptoms that you are experiencing, besides nausea and fatigue, I had none.

I would like to say, give it time. 12 weeks is early. But you are the only one to know. What you are describing is typical of discontinuation. I am sorry, how I would like to make it better.

If you remember, Thismoment had symptoms going on for one year. And made it. How I miss her or him.

    Help with going off Cymbalta

Kathy and Gail, thank you.  I've tried to keep away because I haven't wanted to discourage anyone who's newer to the withdrawl process.  I'm reading a book called, Your Drug May Be Your Problem.  It has some great information but not about long term effects.  I was on Cymbalta for 9+ years so I'm assuming it has done some damage to my brain.  I remember reading about heroin withdrawl and how people struggle with their emotions for months or years afterward because the drug isn't dumping serotonin into their brains anymore.  Basically the wiring in the brain is changed.  I wonder if it's like that for us?

Gail I am still on lorazepam 1X/day and I can also take clonazepam for my nerve pain when needed.  Some of my reading makes benzos sound so bad.  I'm a confused mess.  I suppose I should consider finding a new counselor (I haven't been to one in years).  It's just so hard to find one that supports staying off the drugs.  Or quite frankly, to find a good one at all is hard.  I appreciate the support very much from this group.

BB,

I'm so sorry that you're having these s/e's.  Everything you have mentioned is typical withdrawal.  If the Benzos help you, by all means keep taking them!  I took Alprazolam (Xanax) and still am - after over 10 months off!  The anxiety has pretty much left now, but it was a bear at about 5-6 months off.  You can worry about getting off of those at a later date - if you want to.  Currently, I don't feel the need to stop taking them as they are helping!  I also take Hydrocodone for fibro and arthritis pain.

A good therapist is a great help - not a psychiatrist.  The psyche can prescribe more drugs which you don't need!  A psychologist or Clinical Social Worker can help you to work through this.

And yes, serotonin is the major issue here - our bodies and brains are trying to produce it again after being shut down by the poison drug.

I was wondering what happened to you - please keep posting so that we can try to help you!

Found this today.  Maybe some supplements would help.

Buntbean, good article. Fivenotions is our expert in this matter.

I did try l thyrosine and and tryptophan. As for mucuna, be watchful of the dosage. Thismoment suggested tryptophan instead of HTP. It is somewhere in the archives.

Kathy, love your avatar. Tried many times to put one, alas, I have not succeeded.
