Magnesium As Treatment For Depression?

My sister has been researching magnesium supplementation and sent me these links.  I'm skeptical because the "research" she's been doing is on a "magnesium advocacy" facebook page, and the people there seem to think that magnesium will cure EVERYTHING.  But these studies look decently legit...what do you guys think? Helpful during this weaning process?  Helpful going forward once I'm off cymbalta?  I still haven't decided if I want to do a cross taper onto something else.  Today was my first day bead-counting to 55mg, down from 60mg (and down from 90mg back in January).

I have recently began taking Magnesium for a supplement, but not for depression. My husband takes it and it helps with his energy.  However, I can tell you what I do know about it.  You have be careful with how much of it take because diarrhea is a side effect of it. Outside of that I will bow to the others for more information on this one.

Very impressive articles and Raven is right about the diarrhea. It has long been known that people under stress excrete more calcium and magnesium. Each person should have a CMP each year (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) (Be sure it includes serum calcium and magnesium). If you are even near the bottom of the range than it has been suggested by research that a magnesium supplement be used. Most drs start some one out on 100 to 300 mg/day. As far as the magnesium supplement is concerned it has been well shown that 'chelated magnesium' is the best one to take. It is magnesium bound to an amino acid. Risk of diarrhea is low. Monitor calcium and magnesium routinely in your blood so you can address any imbalances. They compete with each other in the blood so if one gets high the other will drop.

I am taking the chelated magnesium twice a day, and really feel it is one of the things that helped me start feeling better after basically quitting cymbalta cold turkey about 2 1/2 weeks ago. (My doctor told me to do 30 mg every other day for a week,then I could quit, which I did. Wouldn't recommend it! ). After suffering major withdrawal symptoms, I asked my sister for advice. She owns a health food store, and is really knowledgeable on all things healthy. Not only do I now take the chelated magnesium, but also some other things which are helping me get back on track. With the magnesium, if you start having diarrhea or loose stools, you just cut back on the amount you take. I started out with 2 in the morning, and 2 at night, but have now tapered off to 2 in morning and 1 at night. I swear it has helped me out, but it is a different journey for each and everyone of us, so you might have to experiment a bit, to see what works for you. I wouldn't be at all concerned about taking the magnesium, though. Very safe. Hang in there! Keep us posted on how you are doing, ok?
