Weaning off 30mg Cymbalta after 1 year of treatment for anxiety disorder.

I am curious about people's coffee consumption before, during, and after taking Cymbalta. Let me know what works for you and how you think it affects you.

Never been a coffee drinker. I prefer my caffeine laced with hight fructose corn syrup and lots of FIZZ! I've always drank too much Coke and that may very well have resulted in a magnesium deficiency that has caused the depression/dysthymia that drove me to Prozac and $ymbalta. I lived on Coke as a child. My mother NEVER let it run out. She even put it in my bottle! All that phoshoric acid probably wasn't good for a child.
Researching Mg now. Links are posted below if anyone is interested.
Thanks for setting up this survey. Good idea!

I used to drink 5 cups per day whilst on cymbalta. Once I stopped I stopped craving it. It was weird. Now I drink about 3 -4 cups per week. I don't need it like I used to. Btw my doc noticed I needed magnesium supplements and iodine.

I used to drink on average 3 LARGE cups to a pot of coffee every day. Off of Cymbalta now cold turkey 7 days and have dropped to less then 1 cup a day without knowing I was doing it. I have increased vitamin intake and water and feel the need to eat more regularly.

I had to stop drinking coffee while I was on cymbalta because it made me tremor SO badly.  I weaned myself compeletely off of coffee after drinking it my whole life.  Not sure if I wanted to, but it's done.  Now I drink decaf.

after three years on Cymbalta, I decided to stop taking this vile drug cold turkey. I need a support group

Posted 25 January 2013 - 09:11 AM

I used to be an occassional coffee drinker, but I can't tolerate it at all during my withdrawal.  It is because of the taste...  I used to sometimes have a bowl of Cherrios for breakfast, but this morning the cereal tasted horrible...

I don't think it is a caffiene intolerance for me but this strange issue with the way food tastes.

I drank ~4 cups of coffee a day while on Cymbalta, but during the first week of withdrawal less than 1, but now, about to enter the 3rd week of WD, I'm back up to around ~4 cups.  In the beginning of withdrawal, it put the brain zaps into overdrive.

I've been a coffee drinker my entire adult life (I'm 48) and I've noticed since weaning off this stupid drug from satan that coffee makes me too edgy. So I've had to switch to decaf.

always been a coffee drinker, though pretty weak one teaspoon of Nescafe stuff. I know it makes many edgy, but for me it's helped quite a bit with brain fog and general clarity

Actually, the only reason I started drinking coffee was because of cymbalta.  I'm pretty sure, after taking it since 2005, that its contributing to constipation problems, or at least exasterbating them.  5 days, 9 days, 11 days, 5 days, etc.  I can't get 'parastalsis' without it, it seems.  I've been involved with this a long time.  I've tried alot of good advice by my doctor on fiber, stool softener, prune juice, exercise and more regarding the constipation.  However, the only thing that finally initiates the final movement in my colon is if I have a very strong coffee on an empty stomach.  I don't even like coffee.  By strong coffee I mean a small mocha with 2 shots of espresso added to it.  Then wait 30 minutes.  Without the coffee, the only other alternative involves inserting in that area. (Sorry if this is too much information.)  So, I'll keep stomaching the strong coffee for now.

If you are having anxiety, caffeine would be the easiest contributor to reduce. For me, any more than a few cups per day and I can feel it in low-grade anxiety.

Welcome savannarose!

We're so happy that you have found us!

You say that you stopped C. a week ago - are you tapering or did you quit cold turkey?  How are you feeling in general?

Regarding the coffee - when coming off of this drug, we all seem to have found that our tastes have changed and for those of us that seemed to be drinking a great amount of alcohol while on it have stopped altogether.  So many things are happening in your body and your brain is rewiring during this time.

Please post often to let us know how you are doing and feel free to ask any questions you may have, rant or whatever...this is a very safe place and no one will judge you.  I don't know what I would have done without the wonderful people here on this forum.  I just passed one year off the crap cold turkey - not a great year!

We're here for you and want to help!

Liz

I was addicted to Duet Mounta Dew while on Cymbalta. I drank a 12 pack of cans plus (2) 2 liter bottles every day. I cut back because I was peeing too much lol.

Now that I'm off Cymbaulta, any caffeine causes anxiety.

Been on Cymbalta for ~12 years. It's time for that to change

Posted 30 July 2016 - 11:49 AM

I was drinking 3-5 cups while I worked full time. Since then when consulting or not working I only drink 1 cup a day. If I have more I can feel the tension in my body... E.g. My jaw muscles tighten. My take on it is that I am more conscious of my reaction to it. I think the same thing happened while working long days (everyday), but was so engaged in work that I didn't listen to my body.

I always drink at least 10 large cups of instant coffee a day. Not sure what the caffeine content is but I never get wired from it, just love the taste :D

Two cups a day here. Don't feel any effect and could not stomach more then that.

Wow, 10 cups a day and not wired, goes to show how unique we all really are.

Much research has been done and they all show that caffeine makes withdrawal worse in MOST of us. You have to consider they react on some of the same neuroreceptors as our medication. There is also some research that says one cup of caffeinated coffee a day helps with dementia and Alzheimer's risk.  No opinion here, just saying.

My doctor told me that Cymbalta and coffee were both the cause of my frequent urination. I'm giving up the Cymabalta but the not the coffee :). Peeing a lot isn't my only reason for quittting the Cymbalta but it is one of the reasons.

Just so you know, caffeine is a stimulant and will usually add to the anxiety/irritation during withdrawal.

Good point, I have reduced some of my caffeine intake. Trying to only do a max of "2" per day but being a Substance Abuse Clinician I must acknowledge that when I say "two" per day, it' actually measures out to four cups per day. Bleh. So, in reality, I'm trying to do four cups per day instead of six cups per day as I was doing in recent past. But point well taken, I'll try and do half-calf or a lower caf tea instead in the second half of the day.

Coffee contains caffeine which is a stimulant and increases any existing anxiety and makes it worse. If you are taking Cymbalta for anxiety you should not drink coffee.

Medical research

https://www.ncbi.nlm...pubmed/24933334
Coffee increase serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine and increases the effect of the Cymbalta.
