The symptoms are described as brief but repeated electric shock-like sensations in the brain and head, or originating in the brain but extending to other parts of the body. Sometimes moving of one's eyes quickly from side to side has been shown to trigger brain zaps. Sometimes brain zaps are accompanied by disorientation, tinnitus, vertigo and lightheadedness.

In withdrawal from antidepressants, sleeping pills or anxiety medications, these jolts of electricity can worsen and become debilitating, although there is no current evidence that the zaps present any danger to the individual, the serotonin antidepressants appear to be linked to brain zaps, as do anxiety medications and sleeping pills that target GABA.

Thanks TM, I guess I've been having them but never with the wince of pain like yesterday. I'm not worried about it but found it very uncomfortable. It didn't happen often.

Have a wonderful day, Ginny

Hi Ginny, yep....sounds like you've got the "zaps"..... If you use the search box in the upper right of the home page, search for the words "brain zaps".... Don't use the quotation marks....you'll pull up the discussion threads where these are mentioned/discussed....

You also mentioned pain.....which is what I developed in addition to the zaps....I describe it as red hot pokers sticking into my eyeballs....I learned that I had, have, optic neuritis....inflammation of the optic nerve....and yes, it hurts like hell....but there are some things you can do to help ......

Here are links to a couple of good discussions....

Hi Five Notions, I read all the sites and am amazed at what this drug causes. I will keep the Jello in mind if this continues to bother me. I have Occipital Neuritis. It also causes sharp pains in my head. When they come it's just as you described it, a hot poker jabbing me.

I'm so glad I found this site. Thanks for all the information. Hope your day is going well, Ginny
