I agree with the dr. I weaned off of 3 mg a day of Klonopin that I had been on for one year. It took me 2 years but the withdrawal was minimal. At your dosage I would say it would take around 5 months but at that rate shouldn't be an issue.

By the way a 10 mg dose of Celexa is a very low dose so maybe after the Klonopin you can get off the Celexa. That would be great.

Thanks fishinghat. You didn't have horrible, life ruining withdrawal? That's all I can picture in my mind right now and it scares me. She assures me she will make sure we taper slow to avoid withdrawal. I just like to hear from people who have been through something similar. I hate being on it, but right now my anxiety is so bad without it I don't think I'd be able to work. I have no intentions of increasing the dose.

Hi Cheryl,

I was on 2mg of xanax daily for a year and a half.  I tapered myself super slow and had no problems at all.  It was nothing compared to Cymbalta.  I really wouldn't worry about it.

Hugs,

Juli

"Thanks fishinghat. You didn't have horrible, life ruining withdrawal?"

Oh let me tell you, brain zaps, diarrhea, panic, crying, shakes, and that was the good part. About the beginning of the third month fear set in. It was a fear like I had never felt before. It was like looking up just before a bus hits you. It lasted 24/7 for about 9 months. Because of other health issues I could not go back on an AD right away (not that I wanted to). The drs tried 6 different meds during the first few months to get me some help. By the fifth month I could try ADs again and was getting desperate. I went on Prozac, no effect. I went to Lexapro but had to come off due to a FDA warning and then finally Zoloft. Of all the meds they tried I only had luck with clonidine and hydroxyzine but during the height of the fear they had only limited effect. Finally the Zoloft gave relief. During the 9 months of fear I laid in the back of my wife's closet on a pile of blankets in the fetal position with the light on and often screamed in fear. Subsequently I have weaned off all the meds they tried except one and I am now 70% off of it and then will try to wean off the Zoloft.

Over the years I have weaned off of benzos 4 times as well as Ambien and Seroquel.

Are we having fun yet? NOT!!!!

Oh no! So it was horrible to go off the Benzo?!? Now I'm scared about being on the Klonopin again! I haven't increased the dose .25 twice a day at all. Am hoping I can start weaning in another month. You had all that horrible withdrawal even with weaning? How long were you on the Benzo. I was hoping there celexa would help me get off the Benzo easier too. She also had me doing protein shakes every morning because she says the amino acids will help with the taper. Ugh.. Now I'm scared!

Juli is right. My horrible withdrawal was from the Cymbalta. The Benzos have never been a problem for me as I use water titration and go very slow.

Oh ok fishinghat. Cymbalta after my doc cold turkeyed me was absolutely awful too. That is why I believe I'm in the situation I am in now. 6 months is horrible withdrawal! Especially after I was on it for so long. Thank goodness I have a different doc now. I just how she's steering me in the right direction!

Water titration is where you dissolve your medicine in water before taking it. This way the dosage can be adjusted by removing water from the mixture and replacing it with water only.

For example, O am weaning off Lorazepam. I dissolve my dose, 4 mg, in 600 mg of water. I take 50 ml of this solution every 6 hours. This is enough to last 3 days. The next time I make my solution I still dissolve 4 mg in 600 ml of water BUT when I am finished I remove say 1 ml and replace with 1 ml of water. This is a 0.167% drop in dose. This method allows for great control of your drop rate. Of course you can drop faster if wanted by simply removing more water each time.

Hi kimmybc! I am up to 7.5 mg of celexa and will go up to 10mg next week which is the goal. I have been having more good days than bad which is good. My anxiety seems to be lessening. I'm still on .25 Klonopin twice a day which I would really like to start weaning off. If all keeps going well I'm going to ask the doc if I can start weaning next week. I've been on it daily for 6 weeks now and it still terrifies me I will have withdrawal coming off. I guess I will have to take it one day at a time. I am feeling hopeful though that I am headed in the right direction. Thanks for asking!

Hello Cheryl,

Good to hear that you are doing better.

Don't be in a hurry to taper the benzo, it's been rough enough for you as it is.

That small dosage plus the time you've been on it will be an easy job. Give yourself a chance.
It's nothing to be scared about, I Know from experience. When you go slow, there's nothing to it, I promise!

I've been on .25 Klonopin twice a day for about six weeks. Doc says I can either cut daytime dose in half or just stop taking it. Do you think this will be ok? Will I have withdrawal or do I just need to try and see

She's still having me stay on the .25mg evening dose at least until I see her in 3 weeks. Not sure if that makes a difference. I will also be bumping my celexa up to 10mg on Friday.

Your dose is so small you should be able to cut it in half with little to no problems. The way I have suggested to wean off of benzos is 0.16 mg every 6 days. This is extremely slow but usually provides for no withdrawal. Your drs taper is in line with that.

Most drs usually reduce the bedtime dose last at it may help with sleep while weaning. You are going to be fine. Time and patience.

Ok. So you think if I cut it in half for a week then stop I'll be ok. I'll probably taper the night dose in another 2 weeks

Thank you Gail and Fishinghat. I've already got myself in a tizzy just today thinking about only taking half a dose this afternoon. I feel like I'm waiting for something bad to happen and hopefully that will not be the case! I need to just take day by day and hope I won't have any withdrawal. If I do, do you think it would be relatively short?

Woke up at about 2am feeling like my arms were on fire! Is this from cutting my dose this afternoon? This is scary! Do you think it's some withdrawal?

No, not withdrawal. If too nervous Cheryl, instead of eliminating the .25 then cut this one in two. Nerves and anxiety can play stupid tricks on you Cheryl.

Following you and with you sweetheart till the end. You will be ok, believe me! Xx

I think Gail is right on this. The burning sensation is a form of polyneuropathy and is common with changes in antidepressant doses. It should fade.

These last two days have been rough. I think not because of withdrawal but my nerves and I'm still not on a therapeutic dose of celexa. I will start the 10mg of celexa in two days. It was hard for me to work today because of my anxiety and I couldn't really eat. The doc is suggesting I go back on the daytime dose .25 of Klonopin until I stabilize on the 10mg of celexa. I see her in about 3 more weeks. I will be off for summer vacation then. By that time it will probably be 3 months I'll have been on Klonopin. Do you think this will still be ok???

Cheryl,

You will just need a slower taper by then. I agree that you should stay on it till you feel stable.

With the upping of Celexa, and the nerve thing, forget about Klonopin tapering.

Go for it Cheryl!
