I am coming up on 3 years free of antidepressants. Is it possible for insomnia to develop this fat out? Could it have been there all this time? Why haven't I noticed before now? Sleep aids make me groggy.

If you have a history of sleep disturbances, then it can come on regardless. Whilst AD's are commonly known for such issues, life circumstances are always going to contribute to insomnia. Z-drugs (insomnia meds) are best avoided at all costs unless absolutely necessary. Meditation, ashwagandha, melatonin are a good place to start.

Unlikely from the withdrawal. I would suggest one thing. There is recent research showing that around 3 mg of sublingual (under the tongue) melatonin helps considerable. The effects are different than taking a melatonin tablet. By placing the melatonin (liquid) under the tongue it goes into the blood stream rapidly and quickly puts you to sleep. It also wears of quickly and minimizes the groggy hangover.

The subjects of the test used it in two different ways. 3 mg to get to sleep quickly and or the 3 mg to get back to sleep quickly if they wake in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep right away.

I recommend …

I haven't had a healthy sleep pattern since the birth of my first child. When my husband started night shift I found it hard to go to bed without him home.

I have tried Melantonin tablets but not liquid. I will look into it.

sublingual methods often work better

depending on the med, bypassing the stomach can have quite a marked effect

Well for one, it is only subject to degradation by saliva enzymes rather than stomach fluids and initial metabolism by the liver. So most of the time, you get a stronger dose, and it is more often than not a lot quicker. Some foods and liquids can also play their part in absorbing meds too.

When I take Valium, which isn't that often now thankfully, I break the tab in half and leave it under the tongue to dissolve which only takes around 6-7 minutes. Then use your tongue and rub what is left into your gums before washing back a mouthful of water to remove any undesirable taste.

Sublingual benzos usually bring fast relief. One unique characteristics is that clonidine can not be absorbed sublingual. Very unusual.

My son takes clonidine for sleep. He has ADHD and is high functionally Autistic.

Have there been any discussions here about CBD oil?

Raven, I have recently started having sleep problems and I have been off the poison for over 5 yrs now.  Sometimes I am awake every 2 hrs....

Really never feel rested and have not found that Melatonin works well for me...but if anything strange can happen, it will usually happen to me!

Sweet Liz,

Come to think of it my sleep patterns worsened even more after getting off the poison. So, to recap:

Birth
+
Sinbalta withdrawals
+
Hubby's night shift
=
No sleep for Raven🙃

I have only one of those things in common, Raven, but I understand how frustrating it is...

Especially when my dogs are sleeping soundly on my bed and I am wide awake! :o

Yes - following the initial result from epilepsy (particularly in children), further studies then went on to ADHD - although not quite the same, the spectrum runs the same lines. There have been papers published in journals - not just your average home experiment whereby statistical improvements were noted in a number of characteristics, including attention and communication. I will find one and post for you in a minute...

Further, melatonin has undergone trials for autistic children who have trouble sleeping - so again - along the same spectrum, so I would say that this also may well have its place here.

Please feel free to ask anything, and I will do what I can to answer!
