Hi everyone,

I came here to ask for your recommendation on how to taper off properly from duloxetine.

I was prescribed the generic cymbalta 20mg while I was going through a tough time at work. My boss has been bullying me since November of last year and she has continued to do so. Anyway, I started having panic attacks everyday before going to work and I am anxious to the point that I was unable to sleep. Prior to Cymbalta, I am only taking birth control pills, omega 3, B complex, and occasionally I take Claritin D for allergies.

The Cymbalta 20mg got me through that dark time by calming me down and stopping my panic attacks. I have been on it for about a month and a half but I cannot handle the fatigue and the brain fog it gives me everyday. It seems like I am not thinking at all. Last week I was driving on the highway and someone beeped at me because I am not staying in my lane = ( . It's like I became a zombie. I became lazy too with my responsibilities which was completely out of character. I even dropped from a night class I signed up for because I cannot focus and my motivation was gone. In addition, my scalp won't stop itching.

When I told my doctor about the side effects, she told me to start weaning off by taking it every other day instead of everyday. Instead of doing that, I watched a couple of youtube vids where some did the bead counts etc. My method was to split the beads in half, take the half and discard the rest. I am now in Day 5 of 10mg.

The 3rd day on 10mg - had a bout of vertigo then fell asleep, woke up the next day feeling so exhausted.

4th and 5th day - not dizzy but still exhausted ( side note, I started to "feel" again. I laughed at jokes, finally motivated to go to work and clean my office this Sunday, went to church, etc)

Am i doing this right? Is it safe to drink Monster or Red Bull while weaning off this med?

I went to CVS and bought the following: Vit D3, Coq10, Ginger Root tabs, Dramamine, B12, and Omega 3 vits and Apple Cider Vinegar to detox. Am I being too much ? ( lol )

I just accepted a new position in another department and will be starting in 7 days. I don't want to have the withdrawals affect my training and performance but I cannot keep taking the awful med because of the extreme fatigue and the "duh" feeling.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Hi oceandrive and welcome to the forum.

It might not be my place to say this, but the answer to your problem was not an antidepressant. Sorry that this is my go-to response, but I am quite firm that drugs should be the last resort after following other avenues of rectifying these situations, and your doctor should have suggested this. But... a sincere well done to you for getting a new position. I hope his works out well for you.

Regarding the Duloxetine, you are still going through start-up effects if you have been on them for 6 weeks, but that is not to say they may not be a reaction as I had exactly the same after 12 weeks. But given the circumstance under which you started them, the best thing you can do is get off them.

Your doctor was wrong to suggest every other day to wean off, and you did well to look up about the bead counting. Dropping 50% might have been a bit much for your system, but as you have got to 5 days, it is worth sticking with it for now, but I suggest you stay on 10mg until you have been stable for a good few days.

I can see your situation with the new job, but this is a delicate balancing act. You want to come off the pills to restore some function... sure, but if you go too fast, this will only cause more suffering and jeapordise the new job too. So, wait until you stabalise on the 10mg, and DO wait, as dropping before WILL cause more problems. Then count the number of beads left at 10mg and remove 10% to give you 9mg. Give this 3 days for the levels to settle and go from there. If you feel good enough, then press on, but do go cautiously, and DO wait at least 3 days as the effects of the drop will not be seen until then as it takes this time for the body to react.

The supplements you bought are good, although I would not consider the CoQ10. This can have its own problems. I'd leave the D3 and B12 as well as you are likely to have enough of these, and too much again, can cause problems. Ginger for any nausea, Dramamine for any wobbly moments and ACV for detox, but dilute it well unless you want to see your dentist in the next few days! Omega 3 with around 2000mg of combined EPA/DHA is paramount. Get on these asap.

This should get you started. Please keep us updated, and feel free to ask any questions - we'll look after you!

I don't have much to add to what IUN said. He pretty much hit the nail on the head.

And for goodness sake DON"T drink Monster or Red Bull while weaning off this med. Caffeine, sugar, salt and many other things can really play havoc with your emotions at a time like this.

Good morning!

IUN, thank you for the quick response to my post. You are right about the drugs being the last resort in the situation I was in. My doctor knew that I am dealing with was more situational but my boss was pushing me to my limits that I was closed to calling HR and also one day away from being on stress leave.  Thank God that an opportunity came up in another department and though I never had any experience, the manager decided to hire me for the position. For some reason, my boss stopped bullying me too and became extra nice - yes much more pleasant.

I will see my doctor again this week and maybe I can discuss other options to deal with my anxiety and depression without turning me into a lazy and itchy zombie, otherwise I will just wait until I am completely off Cymbalta.

I will follow your recommendation to stay on 10mg. I will take it for another week then will start removing beads each day until zero. I will increase my fish oil intake too. As for the ACV, I will mix it with water. As for the Coq10, I took one tab yesterday and I think it upset my stomach so I will hold off on that. Thank you again.

And for goodness sake DON"T drink Monster or Red Bull while weaning off this med. Caffeine, sugar, salt and many other things can really play havoc with your emotions at a time like this. - Fishinghat  -  I will keep this in mind. Thank you as well. I do have coffee in the morning though as a habit. (lol)

Hello, oceandrive! I too am on 10 mgs Duloxetine and cold turkeyed from 20mgs. Feel like I’m more or less stabilised on it before tapering off. Great about your new job! IUN and fishinghat have all the science so you’re in good hands. Good luck with your new job! :)
