Hi There All,

I posted about a year ago when my wife decided to stop her Cymbalta cold turkey. There was no convincing her otherwise. Long story short she had a hypomanic episode which destroyed our marriage then had to go under emergency psychiatric care for planning her suicide as she started to emerge from the hypomania several months later.

Its been a year and although we are still friends our marriage never recovered. She 'doesn't remember what it felt like to love'. She tells me all she feels is anger and sadness. Her emotional range is very far from what it used to be. She used to be kind and caring, and up until when she stopped cold turkey, she used to look at me like she completely and utterly loved me. To be fair I often feel similar, angry and sad, that our lives were torn apart by a poorly understood psychiatric drug.

However that can't be changed, what I was wondering is whether anyone can comment on long term recovery of emotional normality. Is this restricted range of emotions expected to be permanent. Will she ever regain her feelings for me. Even if she doesn't regain those feelings I hope her ability to feel returns. It seems like a curse, to be damned to feeling nothing but anger and sadness due to a drug side effect. Any experience of going back to long term normality would be greatly appreciated. She tried a number of supplements which did seem to help in the short term, however none of them are advised as long term solutions so she did wean herself off.

Thanks in advance

Hi there again HRTBroken...

I remember your posts like they were yesterday. I am so sorry to hear of the subsequent difficulties and how a drug can do this to the lives of people. The best people to answer this question would be Hat and Liz, and I am sure they will be along soon. Both have been here longer and therefore have more experience of such stories of recovery over time. But it is worth noting that we have seen some symptoms take up to 2 years to fully restore normal function. Brain plasticity is a real phenomenon so change is perfectly possible. Nothing is permanent, but the individual has got to see it as "not normal" and work with the change themselves.

I wish you well...

IUN

Hi HRT

Hold on to hope. Most see around 8 months to be fairly normal emotions after the last dose BUT there have been some that took 1 to 2 years. There is still hope. Is she taking any psych meds right now?

Now that I have been off this poison for over 6 years, I hope to help others as they join us

Hi again HRT...

It will be 6 yrs in Jan since I stopped this miserable poison (also cold turkey, I might add) but to this day I am still quite emotional.  I feel no rage or anger but can cry if I even see a sad picture.

Most all other symptoms have finally left, but with me it took quite a while.  (I also lost the almost 40 lbs the poison helped me to gain)

I'm sorry for what you and your wife have been through and wish you both the very best.
