i am trying to come off of cymbalta and its the hardest thing i ahve ever been through.

Posted 22 April 2010 - 12:09 PM

i have been taking cymbalta for about two and a half years, started at two 20 mg pills a day, one in the morning, one at night....that worked for about a year, then when the depression symptoms worsened i was raised to two 30mg pills twice a day, which seemed to help for about six to eight months, but now i just feel bad all the time, so i decided to try to stop taking it all together, but all of my attempts have been fails because i did try taking them every other day (but as i read on here thats not such a good idea) and my withdrawls were instant, from the time i woke up on the day i was not taking them i had a horrible headache, dizziness when i turned my head, and chills and feeling like flu symptoms. lately i have been taking them just as i needed them, not even for depression, but for the physical withdrawls to be reduced, which as soon as i take a pill they are gone within about an hour, so its realllllyy hard to stop taking them. yesterday it was an inbetween day where i wasnt taking it and threw up all day and had to lay in bed and finally went to sleep for almost 15 hours. i woke up today feeling okay, still very weak and my head seems to always hurt now. im not sure what to do. i could start splitting open my 30 mg capsules and try taking just 15mg everyday. the main reason i am trying to come off of them is my insurance is so crappy and only covers 500 dollars a year in perscriptions and apparently cymbalta is 250 a bottle, so i have to buy 6 pills a week at 25 dollars. its just crazy to pay 100 dollars a month for something that is obviously doing me more harm than good, but i cant quit cold turkey because i HAVE to work and i get sent home with flu like symptoms all the time. im not even really looking for a solution on here, i just saw alot of other people are going through the same thing, and well if anyone has any ideas, let me know. thanks.

If you are still depressed after completely withdrawing from Cybalta, there are plenty of generics which will cost you much less. Many find it easier to come off Cymbalta while taking Prozac at the same time, and there are generics available of that.

The reason you're having problems is that you keep re-introducing the drug to your system; the withdrawal symptoms are your body trying to get back to normal. By continuing to take Cymbalta when you get them means you're in a never ending vicious cycle.

The only way for you to get off with as few withdrawal effects as possible is to reduce very slowly.

As you've been taking it on & off anyway, you COULD try 15mg, but you MUST take it every day. Once ALL withdrawal symptoms have passed, you can then think about dropping (eg) one mg at a time (keep the beads for later on). This way your brain slowly gets used to the reduced dose.

You may get some withdrawal symptoms with each drop, but they will be much milder, and you will know that you will feel a little better every day.

When you've run out of Cymbalta capsules, and only have beads (9 beads equals 1 mg) you can buy empty gelatine capsules for $10 for about 100, and use those to put the beads in.

regards, Maureen.

Hey Cailsey,
Name is Doob and I am currently 25 days of cold turkey. I had to go cold turkey for many of the same reasons but the most important was I did not like what I was feeling which was nothing. I have been on this site for 19 days and reading all I can from anyone. There is a lot of information here about weening plans, you will have to put one together that suits your sensitivity to the drug. For me I have tried to stay hydrated and watch my sugar intake. Cymbalta played hell with my sugar levels. I have just tried to be more healthly with my life style and especially diet. It was hard for me to verbalize how I was feeling to people. I share this website with them. I am more involved with my family. I play guitar so I have tried to play everyday. I guess that void is what you are supposed to fill "life". Scary but extreemly exhilirating.
Today a lot of the fog is gone and I know my emotions are real not just a empty feeling. Still have Brain zaps and headaches but they are decreasing. I feel better everyday.
Good Luck with this step in the road. :)
Peace
Doob
