I have been on Cymbalta for several years and my doctor started weening me off 3 wks ago. I am now having symptoms that I don't understand

THIS IS WHAT I WAS RESPONDING TO ON OTHER CAFEPHARMA THREAD. Just FYI............

FYI: Cymbalta

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Latest posting from a Cymbalta Withdrawal forum:

"Help! I've never tried to respond to an online post before so I hope this gets through. I am 5 days off of Cymbalta, and I'm having a very hard time. I felt okay at first, just a little irritable, and then 2 days ago I started getting this metallic whooshing sound in my head, and I'm really nauseous and dizzy. Sometimes the sound in my head stops for an hour, and then when I move around it happens almost continually. I'm so scared! Friday I saw a nurse practitioner and she said I was probably coming down with the stomach flu (maybe I was, I threw up and was freezing most of Friday) but I still feel like crap, and worse I am having horrible mood swings - I just feel like crying and/or I'm angry and I feel HORRIBLE. I quit drinking through AA 15 months ago, and this is the FIRST time I've felt close to having a drink. I feel like I'd do anything to stop feeling like this. I was only on the Cymbalta for 2 months, after switching from 10 years on Zoloft because the Cymbalta was supposed to be better for my fibromyalgia. I was doing pretty well, and decided I had never tried finding out if I could do life without the meds, now that I'm not drinking. Now I don't know what to do. Why is my head ringing? Can this be permanent? I'm going to go back to the Doctor's office tomorrow. I can't believe I wasn't warned that I might go through this. Please write back soon. Julie."

Thank you again Eli-Lilly for your contribution to personal suffering and anguish in the name of profit.

I agree. The Cymbalta addled bitch. If you can't tolerate a simple neuro-chemical brain bomb, don't take the drug...

I wonder why you went off Cymbalta if you were doing well. Did you stop it on your own or were you supervised by your Physician? What dose were you on? All SSRI's (including Zoloft) and SNRI's (Cymbalta) have discontinuation side effects. Weaning aff the drug is ALWAYS reccommended. If your physician directed you to stop the Cymbalta then he would have suggested this, which leads me to believe you stopped it on your own. Talk to your physician.

Er...wasn't her physician supposed to talk with her before he prescribed Cymbalta so she could make an informed choice about taking it? Perhaps he could have mentioned that Cymbalta may blow out her liver. Or that its withdrawal could make her crazed for months?

You know, little incidental stuff like that.

Hey, and maybe Lilly would think about being more up front about those things in their ads. Nah, reptilian Pharma profit trumps human misery every time.

I've been taking Cymbalta for over a year & have unbearable side-effects so have started to taper down my dose & hopefully come off. I'm now stuck between unbearable side-effects staying on & unbearable withdrawal coming off. I'm so lost & need help, advice & support from people going through the same thing, coz there's almost zero help for people wanting to come off their meds here in Australia.

OMG Barney I can't believe this, how horrible can people get! How dare they! That poor woman was crying out for help how could anyone Lily rep or otherwise talk to someone in that way after such a plea; I'm just absolutely stunned. All I can hope is that someone else jumped in to counsel her & slam the others hurtful & potentially damaging comments. I'm so lucky that I found this web community & not that one! Holy crap I pray that girl is ok.

Fortunately for her, I think Julie DID post on a supportive site, but the rep copied & pasted it to their site where they had 'fun' with her post.

It's very tempting to make reciprocal comments about their choice of occupation, but I won't stoop to their level.

( ... tempting as it might be ... ) :))

Maureen you are correct...they copied from a message board and posted to theirs. Then began to ridicule. I do not know if it was from this site or not. I just wanted you all to see what kind of reps Lilly had and how little they care. That was my point. Whe I saw this it made so angry, thus my vent on the other thread. Having a real bad time right now. after 2 weeks I thought I would see some let up, but not yet....

HI Barney,

what can I say except 'hang in there' (not much use, eh?)

I know you're determined to stick with the cold turkey method, so I can only say all power to you, I couldn't do it, not even from a lower dose, but apart from my impatience to be done with this, am finding the slow taper method (down to 7.5mg) excellent.

What's the worst part of it, for you??

take care,
Maureen.

Worst part for me right now is the horrible pain throughout my body, especially deep in my chest. I also still have the diarrhea, headache. Brain zaps were bad yesterday but today tolerable. My Neurologist wanted me to contact my GP cause of the diarrhea?? So I called GP. He called me back today. Thankfully another wonderful doc that I have. He & my Neurologist both think going back on a very low dose of cymbalta would help take edge off my withdrawals. I told him NO. After 2 weeks off I am not going to take a step backwards. He completely understood and said he would probably do same. They just want to somehow help me through this. Today is bad emotionally. I had to cancel a trip my husbad & I had planned for next weekend. We were going back to where we got married...its our 25th anniversary. It's just tough cause my husband & I really needed this get a way. I know I'm tough, but right now I don't feel that way. I'm emotionally and physically worn down.

Hi barney,

do you know Mersyndol? (night strength?)

I usually just resort to paracetamol for pain if I can, but If I have any pain associated with all the other things you have I wouldn't be hesitating to take the Mersyndol. It has a relaxant in it which seems to stop the loop somehow with some pain - I came to it for migraine prevention. (I wouldn't have been able to take it after the start of a migraine, as it would make me throw up.)

You may not want to add anything to the mix at the moment, but just putting the suggestion out there ...

take care, Maureen.

To be honest I was thinking the relaxant would be more of an issue; for me coedine and constipation go together like, um. well, you get my drift, so I tend to forget it's addictive.

We only had one type of Mersyndol until a few years ago when they brought out a 'Day strength', which is a stupid name, because I've no doubt it;s the relaxant in it which helped prevent my migraines.

It's OTC but ask the chemist here too.

Maureen.
