Am trying to get off Cymbalta 30mg and wondering about brain zaps.

Posted 02 December 2009 - 04:04 AM

Hi, I am new to this site, I have read several posts and information from other sites. I have been on Cymbalta since June 09. I was having terrible vertigo, nausea, dizziness, and basically feeling like I was going to die, my regular physician could not figure out what was wrong with me, he gave me meds for dizziness, blah blah blah...then he sent me to an ENT, who basically told me my ears were fine to go to a Neurologist....he diagnosised me with migraines and said I should take Cymbalta. I specifically told him I did not want to be on any antidepressants. He said this was different and I would actually like it. I am currently taking 60mg.

Well, here we are in Dec. and I have to admit for the first few months I did like it, now not sooooo much. I am not having all the bad symptoms everyone else seems to have from taking the drug, however, I have gained about 15lbs in 6months and I am only 5ft, plus I have decreased my calorie intake almost to half and still keep gaining weight. That is enough to personally make me crazy.

I have contacted my neuro to begin being weened off, he says take for another week then just stop. UH NO!
So I called my physician, he said just stop taking them and the withdrawal symptoms will be gone within 48 to 72 hrs. UH NO again!.

I personally know that when I have missed just 1 I could barely get out of bed the next day. I have a 2 year old and cannot afford to be completely out of it for several days just to recoup.

So, today, I opened my 60mg, divided the contents in half and am starting from there. Any advice any one can give will be mostly appreciated.

Hi Melissa,

If you don't feel o.k. on 30mg you can taper more slowly by buying gelatine capsules and dividing the doses. The beads themselves are slow release so it's important they're not damaged one the way to your stomach.

Slow weaning is the best way to go with this drug.

regards, Maureen.
