I have been taking Cymbalta for treatment of fibromyalgia for over two years. I cannot recall the exact time. I started at 60mg/day and during a recent fight with depression, my dose was upped to 60mg twice a day.
During this time, I have had many symptoms that I never even once equated with it's use. I cannot sleep. I have an ache in my left abdominal area that can be exacerbated or induced, but also occurs on it's own randomly and after numerous tests(MRI/CT/ultrasound/colonoscopy), nothing can be found "wrong" with me. I have trouble with recall, for instance, I cannot immediately think of the word I am trying to use, or sometimes just memory troubles in general. I am a well-educated individual and the appearance of ignorance is noticeable.
I do not believe that in any of the time I have been taking this drug that it has actually helped me with my pain related to fibromyalgia. Fibro patients tend to have depression issues, but I don't believe that this was the case with me up until one year ago. Alot of things were going poorly for me, and I think it just put me in a tailspin. I never wanted to hurt myself in any way, but I couldn't cope with much of anything. I called in "sick" to work alot and eventually quit my job before I could be fired. Unfortunately, this left me without medical insurance and I can no longer afford to pay for the Cymbalta. About six months ago, I went back to the once a day 60mg and didn't notice any real difference in feeling better or worse. This month, I decided to wean myself as my supply has been dwindling and I knew I shouldn't go cold turkey. I decided to take an every other day approach and boy howdy has it been one hell of a week. I started Monday, the 1st, and by Friday, the effects of not being on the Cymbalta are so crazy, and I didn't even think that this could be the cause until I did a little internet search.
So, my problem I would like assistance/advice with is: 1)How long does it take to clear your system? If half-life is 12 hours and I take it once a day, I am technically in withdrawal by the time I take my regularly scheduled dose according to what I read and understand. 2)If missing two out of four days can make me feel like this, how do I ever get off of it? I have extreme dizziness and disorientation in addition to nausea and diarrhea. 3)Is there a lawsuit or something that one can file for the problems this drug causes? It is supposed to make you feel better and I am betting that once it clears my system officially, I'll suddenly become alot healthier. I doubt I'll get my life back immediately, but I can't believe that my doctors never once suggested or suspected medication could be playing such a huge role in my medical problems.
I appreciate any incite y'all can provide. And no, I am not from the south, but the people in the part of the state where I live think they are southeners and it has begun to stick. =)

Lexa,
Your coming off it way to fast, your in heavy duty withdrawls!!!
I too was nuts on this stuff, and had all the things you talked
about, and more.

You not even into the full withdrawls yet, but in about 4 more
days you really will be.

What we learn here is to do a very slow wean, and that's to just
reduce by 10 beads every 2 weeks until your done.

Some can do it 20 beads every 2 weeeks, but you just have to find out
what you can tolerate so your still able to function.

I was on 60 mg for 3 1/2 years, and started my wean Aug 31,09, and I
am at 30 beads. I had gottten down to 26, but it was too hard, so I upped
it this am, and it is a difference.

If you want the bead count look back a feew days or so,as I have put it up,
if not I can do it again just let me know.

Alos contact Eli Lilly now for free samples as they will provide this med
for you, they love giving it out!!

I am currently on Cymbalta after many years of other drugs including Zoloft, Wellbutrin and Effexor. I had a terrible experience coming off of Effexor that resulted only in my going back on, then changing to Cymbalta. I feel, at this point, that the drugs are causing as many problems as the initial depression did, and am looking at the possibility of coming off but am living this year in rural Italy and need some real support in considering this possibility and its consequences.

Hi Lexa -
I have no comment about the lawsuit issue. I'm focusing on getting off healthy and I really, truly, strongly recommend that you do the same. Put off lawsuits until you're whole again.

You've come to the right place. Slow down -- it's not a race. Take Debbie's advice about the weaning which will mean increasing your dose temporarily. This is strong stuff -- it can be helpful but it's also hazardous. I'm looking forward to being clean again.

Good luck.

Hi Lexa

Debbie and Queen are right. It's better to do a slow taper than a quick one. Also, getting the drug out of your system doesn't automatically resolve everything. These drugs alter the way our brain functions. It can take a while for it to return to its pre-med way of functioning. This is the important factor. The time it takes to heal.

Doing a slow taper allows the body to heal in small amounts at a time. This also gives the person a better quality of life during the withdrawal process. Another forum I go to (Paxil progress) recommends drops of 10% (of the dose you are on at the time of the drop) every 3-6 weeks. The idea is to wait until you are feeling no wdl effects before doing another drop.

Hope that helps

A question for you and NurseDeb and others who hae been here awhile, I posted on another page about my similar issues, but just want to know one thing, is there anyone writing on this site who is completely back to their pre-drug normal self? I've yet to read about anyone who has come through 100 percent. Is there anyone who knows for certain they are completely free of this drug and all of its side effects etc.? And that there is hope for the rest of us still trying to get there?

Crazylady,
I am sure that we will all get better someday, when I don't know, anmd I do think it
depends on the person as we are all different. Also some have been on these drugs for
many years, and now are deciding to get off all of them.

Cymbalta brought me to my knees. but as I look back, and remember when I stopped Paxil
cold turkey just due to being so nut's on it, and place on something else so fast, and
another after that, well my brain is really a mess. I just think for some that these are
not the answer, and that plain old therapy works just great! That's what I did for many
years, and never needed and a/d's.

I do believe once I have been off all of them for a few years I will be ok, and go back
to being my oldself. I can tell the difference already just by getting the dose of C
down to 28 beads!!!!

I am one of the unlucky one's and ended up with "Sleep Apnea", and it's the kind where
my brain does not send the signal for me to take a breath during my sleep. I never had
it until I started this drug. Who know's if it's permanate? Or my vision in my right
eye? They think now I am getting glaucoma!!!!

I am all for exercise, good diet, and all natural methods from here on out, but that is
not for everyone as some must take medications!!!!! This is just for me, and what I want.

Hi Crazylady

I've certainly recovered from my short stint on Cymbalta but, having previously been on a/ds for 11 yrs, was still in wdl from, well probably both Aropax (Paxil) and Lexapro (gotta love how hindsight has 20/20 vision!!). I was forced to go back onto Paxil in order to get some sleep. I was on 40mg but have now successfully weaned down to 20mg. I plan to stay on this dose for a while as my job future is uncertain and I want that settled before considering coming off. I also have to deal with my fears of GAD returning but that is another story ....

If you go to http://www.paxilprog...display.php?f=7 there are some very good stories there. The moderators believe that everyone recovers. It's just that some take a lot longer than others.

Regards
Junior
