Am trying to get off Cymbalta 30mg and wondering about brain zaps.

Posted 14 March 2010 - 11:50 PM

I have been on cymbalta for about 6 months. It helped a lot with my extreme anxiety and OCD. I just feel that the weight gain and sexual side effects and irritability are bothering me enough to come off. I'm wondering if anyone's anxiety was better after coming off or if you fell into that anxiety again?? I know I'm not cured, but any chance its better after taking this?

I haven't seen anyone say their anxiety was 'cured' in any way with Cymbalta; if you've done nothing apart from take Cymbalta for your anxiety then chances are withdrawal will be a very difficult time for you, because anxiety is a big problem for many of us who've never had it at any other time.

It puts you in a difficult spot, because to just come off without having dealt with your anxiety and ocd issues (IF that's the case) means they're going to re-appear, along with having to deal with the withdrawal symptoms which most/many on Cymbalta have to deal with.

Sorry if I haven't been much help, but I've seen too many people on here (in your situation) trying to deal with withdrawal AND returning symptoms.

regards, Maureen.

Hi JJPTC

Anxiety is never really 'cured' while on pills, only controlled. If you've not have any therapy then it's likely the original problems will still be there when the medication is withdrawn. If you want to come off it, now would be a good time to consult a talk therapist; someone who can help you to gain the tools to deal with your anxiety in future. I also understand that OCD can be greatly helped with therapy too - I think behaviour therapy / cognitive behaviour therapy is the best method (been a few yrs since I studied this!!).

Just a warning: as Maureen said above, people sometimes find they experience things during withdrawal that they had not had problems with in the past - such as depressive symptoms and anxiety. You will know the difference though. It is chemical and you can actually feel the difference. The best way to minimise wdl effects is to wean slowly. If you would like more info on that don't hesitate to ask :)

Cheers
Junior
