Stating the obvious, we are here because we are trying to come off of an antidepressant for one reason or another. And, believe me, I do understand not wanting to take something else at all. But it has helped some of the people who post on this forum.

Weaning slowly might be best for some. For those whose doctors dropped us down too quickly, a bait and switch approach may be the answer. It seems to have worked for many people here. If you try the one dose of Prozac and this helps just one of you not go through weeks of torture, please let us all know. Print out these links if you have not already started to wean and show them to your doctor.

Do not let your doctor tell you that there are no withdrawal symptoms from Cymbalta. For some there are none. But, as the number of members keeps jumping up on this forum (I counted, an average of 6 new members a day since Feb 8, 2008 when I joined) it is apparent that many people do have some adverse reactions.. I did not have this information when I came off of Cymbalta incorrectly on my old doctors advice, I wish that I did.

Some notes from Dr. Ivan Goldberg
Subject: Antidepressant discontinuation reactions

The administration of a single 20 mg capsule of fluoxetine usually does the job. The withdrawal symptoms are relieved within hours and the patient goes through a slow fluoxetine withdrawal that is usually symptomless. If the individual had been on a high dose of paroxetine or venlafaxine, a second 20 mg of of fluoxetine may be needed.

Six guidelines to reduce "discontinuation syndrome" or as we all know it, reducing withdrawal (what it really is), the first one recommends a SINGLE dose of Prozac.

This one is regarding Effexor, but I hear it is as hard if not harder than coming off of Cymbalta, again, it suggests the one dose of Prozac to alleviate the withdrawal of Effexor:

So, this means literally a single as in one time dose of Prozac could help? Wow, that would be wonderful! Seriously, if I don't get some sleep soon, I'm going to fall over, and if I keep gaining weight, it is going to worsen my medical condition.

I would NOT suggest Effexor. I was on it for almost 2 years, when the zaps started, just like they do on Cymbalta. To stop them, I was switched to Cymbalta, but I sure wish I would have done more research! They have basically the same effect on the brain, so it is just trading one poison for another. Some of the Effexor support sites have these same horror stories.

I put the Effexor link up there because it is in the same class of medicines as Cymbalta.

I heard is it as bad/if not worse than coming off of Cymbalta. And the suggestion if you are having bad withdrawal symptoms from Effexor is to take one 20mg prozac to get you through it, so, this might be one more tool for people to use to lessen severe withdrawal symptoms.

There is a woman who posts here who said this worked for her and another who weaned with prozac and cymbalta and said it was a cake walk.

I don't know if this works, because I did not know of the option in time.

But, if it is useful to anybody starting the process and is successful, please let everyone here know.

Sorry, I misunderstood, I thought the link was offering Effexor as an alternative to Cymbalta!
