    Starting to get off Cymbalta

Posted 19 July 2010 - 09:44 PM

I am new to this site and tripped on it while searching the web for information regarding withdrawl from Cymbalta. I have to say it's extremely helpful and extremely informative! I have been on 3 different anti-depressants for Anxiety (with episodes of minor depression) with Cymbalta currently for the last 4 years. I am finding out the following (better late than never, but wish it was sooner than 4 years!):

1. I am taking Cymbalta for Anxiety and although I do not have panic attacks anymore (haven't for years) cymbalta actually makes me feel like my "engine is constantly running". Now, why would a psychiatrist prescribe this to me if I'm ALREADY WOUND UP?!?!?!?!? At first I was glad it didn't make me feel "sluggish" like I still had my energy and healthy "motivation" but it's getting to much! Can't ever get a full/good nights sleep! My doctor says to just take a Xanax to sleep!!! ugh!!

2. No sex drive! Not even gonna touch on this cause I'm used to it having been on 2 other SSRI's.

3. WEIGHT GAIN!!! WTF! When I was originally diagnosed with Anxiety I started on Zoloft (weight gain-not that much though), switched to Lexapro to stop the weight gain (didn't help), but I NEVER gained as much weight as I have on Cymbalta!! I was told that Cymbalta has a low percentage of people gaining weight. Um....4 years and 45 lbs! Annnnnd because of this my internal medicine Dr. has me on Cholesterol med's cause it's the highest it's ever been!!! I run EVERYDAY, eat pretty darn healthy...as much as I can w/out becoming obsessive compulsive about it (and THAT would lead me to more drugs:)) and my weight and BMI DOES...NOT....CHANGE!!

I read a bunch of posts last week and figured out how to reduce my dosage to eventually get off this crap!!! I started at 60mg, and for the past 4 days am on 30. Actually, I've not had any withdrawal symptoms yet. So...my question is:

1. When should I expect them?
2. How long should I stay on the 30mg dosage to make this process easier on me and my body?

Thank you for listening and any comments are truly appreciated!!!!!!

I need help getting off of Cymbalta. I have tried to get off twice before and failed both times because of the terrible withdrawal symptoms. I love my doctor, but she does not have a clue about how evil Cymbalta can be when you try to stop taking it. I did manage to come down to 60mg from 90mg last month,as per her directions, but I thought I was going to die. Don't want to go through that again. There has to be a better way to come off of this stuff. HELP!

In the future I would like to stop cymbalta

Dear CindiLou:
I can so relate with your story.
I found this site after taking cymbalta for Major Depression for 5 years. I am sad I didn´t find it sooner, but glad that I found it before I started dropping. I has been so helpful
I have no sex drive either and gained 52lbs while on cymbalta. In my case my gp put me on diabetic med, since I started having glucose/insulin problems.

Even though there are common symptoms, the withdrawal experience can be different from person to person. There is people who don´t have withdrawal symptoms. And among the ones that do, it is difficult to tell you when do the withdrawal symptoms hit. I´ve read on people whose symptoms hit once they drop dosage and others when some days go by.

I learned through this site, that weaning slowly and doing slight drops was going to diminish my withdrawal symptoms.

Hugs

Hi Cindylou,
I am also new to this forum. Today is my first day and this is my first time to post if you don't count the one that I messed up by hitting the wrong button. I also want to get off Cymbalta for all the same reasons that you do and then some. I managed to come down from 90mg to 60mg recently and it was a total nightmare. Beginning on the 5th day I had almost every withdrawal symptom in the book. It was horrible. And yes, like I said in my introduction...I thought that I was going to die before all the withdrawal symptoms calmed down 16 days later. But hey, everyone is different. I do not do pain well. Maybe you are stronger than I am. I am hoping that you have an easier time than I did. Now...to figure out how I am going to get from 60mg to 0mg with as little pain as possible.
Good luck to us both.
Best wishes,
Tessa
