I want help and support to get off this awful drug.

Posted 17 December 2013 - 11:22 PM

I am new here. I've been on cymbalta for about 7 years and I really want to stop. I tried about a year ago and I couldn't do it. I had no idea withdrawals were this bad. This week I've tried taking every other day and tonight I wanted to just destroy everything in my path. Is there something I can do that will make this less painful?

Today will begin my second day with no cymbalta. I did bead count for two days. I just don't want to prolong the withdrawals. So far it hasn't been as bad as the last time I tried, but I realize I'm only into the second day. I've had headaches that aren't too bad really. Bad stomach problems though. For the last seven years I thought my life was forever changed because of breast cancer. I was a very active person; in great physical shape. I've gained 50 pounds that I can't drop. I'm no longer active. Aches and pains everywhere. I would get so angry when I met people or read about people who became strong after breast cancer. I couldn't understand why it was not the same for me. Now I know it was the cymbalta. I want off of it as quickly as possible. So I'm going to try cold turkey. If it gets too bad I will go back to bead counting. If anyone has been successful cold turkey I would live to hear from you. And any suggestions on something natural to take to help. I have no desire to get on another anti depressant to get off cymbalta. I called my doc yesterday to let him no what I was doing. No response from him.

Recently started tapering off of Cymbalta. Having bad effects and wanted to see if there were any ways to do this without having such a negative impact on my functionality.

Welcome to group!   What dosage of Cymbalta were you taking, if you don't mind my asking?   I hope you are one of those folks that is able go with the cold turkey approach successfully.   Just something to consider...you won't experience the true impact of the elimination of the drug for about 5-7 days.   I went from 60 mg to 30 mg and felt fine until day 6 - then I was pretty sick.  I hope that doesn't happen to you.   I just wanted to give you a "heads up," so you aren't caught off-guard by it if it does hit you.  The good news is that you can get back to a better place relatively quickly by taking the full dose again followed by using the bead-tapering process you have heard mentioned.   Some people have also been able to handle the larger drops from (say) 60 mg to 30 mg but then needed to taper from 30 mg.   You'll know soon enough how your body is going to handle the change and what your tolerance is to the reduction.

Best of luck to you!  I hope your approach works out for you.

I'm on day 7 cold turkey. It's been pretty rough for the last 2 days. Cried and stayed in bed all day yesterday. In bed today. But I will get through it. I was at 120 until last year when I reduced to 60. I'm laying low right now. Symptoms are tough.

Donna, I did/am doing the cold turkey thing and it was horrible for my family and I but we are seeing the other side of the mountain. I am 9 weeks tomorrow. I did 30mg for a week after years hooked on crackalta 60mg then went cold turkey.

The first 4 weeks were extremely difficult and I even self imposed a driving restriction for a while. It does get better but the ct way is not for the timid or weak of heart. Just remember that you can make it but there is no shame is taking a new tack if it gets too rough.

Best of luck on your journey.

Lad

I cannot imagine what you are going through cold turkey, and admire you for being so strong. One of the reasons I went off crapbalta was that I got scared at what happened to me when I missed a dose. I fell apart. Something in me told me that a drug that powerful was way beyond me. I was afraid of getting hurt or incapacitated and no one knowing I needed to take my daily dose; because of those couple of times, I carried it around with me. I was its prisoner. Again, cold turkeyers, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Day 10 and I'm so much better! My mind is back. Still dizzy and bit of a headache but I can FEEL! I'm so thankful to my God for helping me through this. I feel human today. I feel awesome today. Never again will I take ANYTHING that might alter my brain. What a nightmare the last 7 years has been. And I'm waking up. Praise God!
