Non-Conformity & Creativity Now Listed As A Mental Illness By Psychiatrists

Good morning FN,
This is from the DSM IV and is not all that new. The DSM V is out. I know this because my 14 year old daughter asked for it last Christmas lol
Im replying to this because of my 4 biological children, all 4 have a DSM IV diagnosis (the apples didn't fall far from the tree). My first born, a daughter who is now 22, has been showing unhealthy/atypical social interactions since she was born. We have had her tested many times through the years. She has above average IQ and is creative in writing, singing, musical instruments, drawing, painting... If she decides to make do anything creative, it comes naturally to her.
Now for the unhealthy part:
Try raising a child who refuses to go to school.
Can't form friendships.
Has no empathy (totally self centered, even at the expense of other peoples health)
believes that rules don't apply to her, but gets very angry when others break the rules
lies and wont admit it even if the lie is proven to be a lie (usually something very elaborate and impossible)
As with any diagnosis, a doctor must consider the degree to which the symptoms are present. A diagnosis should be made only when they are excessive or causing a poor quality of life.
Just my opinion for what it is worth.
PS my daughter is now an alcoholic, chooses to live "traveling" aka homeless on the streets, and has been arrested in three different states (never bothered to go to court). She sometimes will sing and or play her ukulele to get money to buy drugs and booze. gets food by "white boxing" (waiting outside a restaurant and asking for customer's leftovers.
She has been beaten, strangled almost to death and raped on more than 1 occasion, but claims she loves traveling.

Oh dear, that is fascinating! Among those pre-judged and pre-convicted minds in that article we imprison the neo Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine whom we will desperately need to oppose the next real threat that oozes all around us in a borderless world. It's so freaking Orwellian. I'm sure there will be a Philosopher's Wing in the new Enemy of The People Prison. And maybe a hidden labyrinth gallery for Unapproved Thoughts and Subversive Music.

Don't get me wrong please. I certainly have never been a conformist and I consider myself to be quite creative.
There are people that are so extreme in their nonconformity that they can't function in society. I'm not talking about the guy who lives off the grid, grows his own food and wears no clothes. I'm talking about people that ignore laws for no good reason. Just because they have no conscience or believe that nobody should tell them what to do ever. Oppositional defiant disorder is not diagnosed for people who are creative and eccentric and understand right from wrong.

I just hope I get assigned to your wing / section!

Yes, I understand, and did not intend to sound flippant toward your situation- what you are dealing with is serious and I could not imagine how I would react in your place.
The new enties into the text, however, appear to be the preamble to a slippery slope.
Take care.
