Well, the humor thread I started in "Are You New Here" seems to have disappeared, so instead I thought I'd post this article ...

Read so many painful stories on here and offering others support while trying to heal myself from cymbalta and other antidepressents.

I need help and I know I will feel better if I can offer help to others

Isn't PsychCentral.com an awesome website. That is were I found the information to finally accept the fact that Cymbalta had activated the genetic markers I carry for Bipolar. This means that I have to deal with being Mixed Episode Bipolar for the rest of my life but at least having found that website made me realize that I am not alone with my illness.

When I read some of the posts on here that were made since I took time away I often think " Oh God not another now bipolar victim for Cymbalta". Only time will tell but for those who have long lasting (more than 4-6 months) I really recommend trying some of the self quizzes on PsychCentral for depression and other mental illnesses and if you think you may have some problems go see a Psychiatrist who specializes in mood disorders.  It is a genetic illness people and not something to be ashamed of so get some help before it gets worse.

Ha I saw my Psychologist today and my Psychiatrist last week lol so feel like warning the masses against waiting too long to get help. The sooner you get help the easier it is to treat.

Oh and my Psychologist recommends laughter on a daily basis to keep depression away and keep a positive frame of mind.

Take care everyone

Awesome post, LadyNancy ... any chance you could clone your psychologist about a zillion times so each of us could have one of him/her? ;)

LadyNancy,

I too found psych central a great resource when first diagnosed for depression… back in 1995! yep, they were there at the inception of the world wide web. i would use my dial up modem (complete with those screechy connection noises) and log on using the original mosaic browser (pre-netscape!)

i was 'scriped zoloft and then six months later switched to wellbutrin. two years later i was switched to effexor, my first SNRI before cymbalta. three months after that i had a "manic episode" that lasted several weeks. i got the bipolar 2 label and have been on a mood stabilizer ever since - first depakote/valproic acid then lamictal/lamotrigine in 2004. i also switched from effexor to the C in 2004. i've been off the C now for over five months and am convinced that i am NOT bipolar and will try my hand at weaning off the lamotrigine in a year from now, if all continues to improve with the C withdrawal. i have continued to research and my therapist indicates that he can confirm that he knows others who received an inappropriate diagnosis of "permanent" when the episodes were anti-d induced. to be sure it will be an "experiment" - but since the mood stabilizers have prevented repeat episodes, i've avoided "kindling" of the condition that could make it  theoretically permanent. of course, the concept of "kindling" is in and of itself a theory http://pro.psychcent...ry/003588.html#

of course, any attempt at weaning off my mood stabilizer would be done under the care of a psychiatrist and the blessings of my husband ;-)

i think that med induced bipolar is not necessarily permanent. however, if taking an anti-d, a mood stabilizer must be taken concurrently if the bp was triggered by an anti-d. the propensity for anti-d's to trigger manic episodes has been well documented for decades.

while all of us are different and i don't know the details of your situation - i would also hesitate to automatically assume you have bp for the rest of your life. my psych (that i fired) told me i would need to be on an anti-depressant the rest of my life" when i was first prescribed zoloft. he said that the first time he ever saw me - and was my first and only psych for 18 years!

okay, that's not funny "ha ha" but it is funny strange ;-0

here's funny. seen the latest subaru ads? at the end is one of the great quotes from oscar wilde "be yourself, everyone else is taken"

5 months on cymbalta, scary side effects, to get help and to return the favor if I can.

One thing that made me laugh

In July, about 200 degrees outside, at least.

So I go on my balcony to get something and the neighbor sees me and starts bla bla bla, and would not stop. I live on the fourth floor, I am there in the sun trying to listen and not be impolite.

My legs were getting swollen by the minute, so I gave my leg a swing to bring it on the rail,to get the circulation going, he got all upset and said C****, I thought you were going to jump off the balcony!

That got me laughing like crazy.

Thanks for the encouragement but unfortunately I have had so many Mixed State episodes and rapid cycling episodes since getting off Crapalta that it has gone beyond the Anti-d induced and "kindling" has probably already occurred. BUT that being said I will not rule out other non-medication treatments to help keep my mood up and my episodes to a minimum.

And to think I was put on this crap for my pain (at least that was what I was told) and it didn't even work for that.
