It's been 8 days cold turkey after quickly weaning down having been on it for 5 months . I can't sleep to save my life (which has never been a problem) I asked the doctor for something to help he gave me Atarax and it isn't helping at all and apparently has its own set of issues ..... Help

Hi littlemrnofear

Atarax (hydroxyzine) is used for anxiety and allergic skin conditions and is suppose to be sedating. However, while it can be somewhat sedating for some it isn't for everyone. I can take it and will not feel sleepy at all. I don't  know what other kinds of issues you have had on it but many of us have used it for the anxiety associated with discontinuing Cymbalta.

I'm sure there are others here who will jump in with some suggestions on how to treat insomnia.

I'm sure no one wants to be put on the benzo Temazepam like I was. It works short term only and is extremely addictive. If on for too long (more than 14 days) it slowly stops working and the withdrawals were not pleasant.

What else have you tried for your insomnia? Melatonin? Any of the relaxing teas?

Take care of you

Well, I don't know what else to try, so maybe i should try the melatonin. I've heard melatonin can cause intense dreams. On top of or related to the insomnia is the crazy dreams! I will have a very vivid, realistic dream and wake up and eventually fall asleep and they happens all night long. I mean, they are REAL. I have to Ask if something had happened or if I dreamt it and they stay with me all day long , like it really happened. It's kind of scary and unnerving. I get scared that messed up my brain chemistry by taking this and I will never be the same again.....

Sometimes we have to "pick our poison".

I feel coming off the AD is important, so I take Ambien to get that much needed rest. Later, I hope to stop the Ambien.

I've already progressed to sleeping without the TV, which is a major feat! I think the AD caused night terrors which I no longer have.

Good luck, it WILL get better!
