There is something called non-allergic rhinitis, also known as vasomotor rhinitis. With this, various things you inhale irritate the lining of the nose, causing dilation of the blood vessels, and make the nose run. Things that irritate the nose in this case can be cigarette smoke, dust, etc. (This is different from allergic rhinitis, in which the immune system overreacts to allergens you come in contact with.)

One of the symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis is your nose running when you eat. Ever since I came off Cymbalta months ago, my nose runs when I eat. I also have had what I thought were allergies going haywire (nasal symptoms, asthma, ear problems). I went to an allergist this week and they did a blood test on the panel of common allergens, and to my shock, they all came back negative. Which means my symptoms are more likely due to vasomotor rhinitis. (This rhinitis can cause ear issues and asthma symptoms, too.)

My question is if this has been discussed here or not, and if this is a known issue with withdrawal from Cymbalta. One of the causes of vasomotor rhinitis is stress, and my system has been more stressed from withdrawals than it ever has been.

I am hoping that if it's due to withdrawal stress on my body, that it might eventually go away....

Edited to add: I found an old post from MichGirl who said that she had allergy-like symptoms from withdrawal and she wasn't an allergic type of person, and even taking a sip of cold water made her nose tingle & fill up with mucus. I get that tingle, too, from the slightest thing.

Hi Ramona

Allergy like symptoms are common with Cymbalta withdrawal but typically within the first 3 or 4 weeks.

Hi Ramona

I remember quite distinctly thinking that my allergies had gone bonkers on me the spring that I stopped taking Cymbalta because it seemed that everything bother my nose that spring and all summer and well into the fall. I never made the connection though until you posted this. Even brushing my teeth would make my nose tingle and run. It would get so itchy when I brushed my teeth that I would have to stop and blow my nose.

My nose still reacts more than it used to but again I have always blamed my allergies and not made any connection to having taken Cymbalta. I have been off of it for 3 years at the end of the month and never imagined the lingering side effects possible from taking this poison drug or from the withdrawals could ever last this long.

Take care of you Ramona and anytime you want to chat I am around most days.

Nancy

I've been off Cymbalta close to 2 years and I also have a runny nose and allergy like symptoms that I never had before. I wonder if it's from the poison.

Kathy, just a note. I checked the FDA website and there has been no reports of Vasomotor rhinitis as a side effect of Cymbalta. That doesn't mean it never happens.

Fishinghat, I'm the kind of person that if vaso rhinitis might happen to one person, it would be me. Several years ago I got a very rare form of cancer, so it wouldn't surprise me if the nasal symptoms are from the Cymbalta, but of course I can't be sure.
