I need to know if anyone else has had this problem.  It first appeared when I was on Wellbutrin which was before I was put on Sinbalta.  I stopped the Wellbutrin cold turkey (which was hard as well), then it got a little better and I let the doctor talk me into Sinbalta and it went way, or so I thought.  Now I have been off the Sinbalta 1 month and 2 days and it's getting worse and worse here lately.  The smell of cigarette smoke is about to kill me, but the thing is I smell it all the time. Nobody in my family smokes and I am hardly ever around those at work that do smoke.  I was trying to go to sleep last night and swore I could smell it in my Cpap mask.

Has anyone else had this issue?

That's okay FH, thanks for trying. I can't stand it. I feel like I'm gonna choke on it sometimes.

Hi Raven,

Hopefully this is a strange part of the withdrawal that will go away in time.

In my case, I have lost some of my smell - go figure

Mine was just the opposite.  My sense of smell came back. I can smell everything. From a different standpoint of view here; there are some who believe when we smell flowers, cigar, colognes, and etc. they are reminders of our loved ones who have passed on.  I for one do believe our loved ones sends of signs they are truly around us.  On the other side of this, I was definitely more aware of my senses once I was off cymblata, and or antidepressants. Keep us posted on the length of time you are still experiencing this intense smell.....

I have smelled cigarette smoke off and on for years!!!!  I never connected it to Cymbalta.  This is a good topic.  I've weaned slowly and down to 5 mg, I still smell smoke, now it is worse than in the past.  I'm going to do some research on this one.  Great topic!

Yep, I had "phantom" smells during withdrawal ... I lumped 'em in with my visual and auditory hallucinations ... the smells I got were vanilla and roses (separately, not combined) ...

It's call "phantosmia" -- olfactory hallucinations ... the wiki article mentions the use of venaflaxine (SSRI, like crapalta) to treat it ...

Thanks FN for the links - I will read up on them. I am still smelling smoke off and on even when I am stuffed up and can't smell anything else.

I think if I'd had the smoke smell, I'd have just chalked it up to the circuits in my poor brain burning out  :P

In retrospect, all things considered, my crapalta withdrawal hallucinations were pretty ok ... smelling roses or vanilla ... hearing classical music (symphonies and Renaissance chamber music) ...lasted about a month ... the visuals, which I had just a few times, were spooky ... dark, cloaked figures walking through my living room ... yowza ...

Oh, this gets more interesting.  I guess I've also had the auditory hallucinations. I've heard music in my head for years, about as long as I've smelled smoke.  So glad I've never seen anything that wasn't there.  Or have I? haha!  Thanks FN for the links.  I've been doing a little more reading now that my WD symptoms have worsened some.  I'm almost off tho, 5mg to go.  Then from what I've read it will be months after that when I can say I have no symptoms.  Thanks for the info.

Gran, just go slooooow at the end ... the slower you go, the less trouble you'll have ... sure wish I had a suggestion for how to get your brain to switch off the smoke smell .... roses or vanilla sure would be more pleasant   ;)

Gran,

So you are coming close to the end.  FiveNotions is absolutely correct when she states to go slow......very very slow......now that you are down to 5 mgs....slow slow slow

Couldn't say much about the aromas you smell because when I smell them I know they are from someone in my family who has passed on.  I take them as usual events in my day.

and ENT could possibly give you the answer to this is you feel the need.

Light a nice fragrant candle, and see if that helps.....
