Hi everyone, this is my first post on this site/forum.

Some background-- I have been on Cymbalta 60mg for 8 months. After the first month or so I felt like myself again. I haven't been sad or depressed since then it was absolutely amazing-until now. It's like the meds just stopped working. I don't know what to do. To get on these meds I basically went to a walk in clinic and told the doc I wanted Cymbalta because I read great reviews about them. He started me off on 60mg for some reason and I don't know what to do right now. I have to be on some type of antidepressant otherwise I am constantly thinking of suicide. It got to the point that I was seriously considering killing myself, that is why I went the clinic and got the Cymbalta. But now that it has stopped working I don't know what to do. Should I double the dosage? I should probably see a psychiatrist so this can all be figured out. I am just so frustrated because there was light at the end of the tunnel and now it's gone. When I'm not on any meds I feel like I am literally insane, or the opposite. Sometimes both. Either I feel absolutely nothing or my mind is telling me I am crazy.

Any responses or advice would be helpful.

Welcome Crazyinsane,

I would not go any higher. It has pooped out. Cymbalta is know to be the craziest ad ever made.

Since you were feeling so good on it, an SNRI, I would swap for like effexor or another one of the same class.

Some people do need meds for life, you admit that it is your case for the moment.

Others will chime in and possibly suggest other meds, but I know for sure here that no one will suggest that you go any higher on cymbalta.

Hold on, hang on. Have you ever tried another antidepressant?

gail,

Yes I have tried Celexa a few years ago but I believe that one is a SSRI it made me feel flat emotionally, Like I wasn't sad but I definitely wasn't happy either. That is the only other antidepressant I have tried.

Gail,

What do you mean Cymbalta is known to be one of the craziest ads ever made? Meaning how many side effects there are?

Hello Crazyinsane,

I agree with Gail in the fact that you should not double your dose on the Cymbalta.  We all have our nicknames for the drug but I call it Sinbalta.  I made the mistake of going higher and higher on my dose just because my doctor suggested it.  I wanted to come off of it and try something else but she just kept upping the dose. Said she wanted to top me out on Sinbalta before trying something else, just to make sure I didn't need the higher dose.

If you do indeed needs an antidepressant to function, then I would suggest finding a psychiatrist to speak with and see what you can come up with.  It's a hard road to travel coming off of this drug but you need to do it if you are feeling the way you are.  Get with a physician or psychiatrist and see about weaning down and getting on something else.

As for the side effects:

I echo what the ladies have said. Don't double up. It might help for a while but it too will probably poop out. Gails comment about taking another SNRI is valid. I also agree Effexor is your best option. As far as the ssri, well unluckily whether they work or not for a person seems to be a matter of luck. Drs have worked for years to try and determine what ssri will work for a particular person in advance but that is still in the research phase. You can try the Effexor but please keep the ssri as an option.

Please keep us informed and best of luck to you.

Welcome, CI...

We are happy that you found us - this is a safe place and no one will judge you.

Often, when coming off of the poison drug, your Dr. will have you cross-taper with another a-d, such as Zoloft or Prozac.  This method has been successful for many.  I strongly suggest that you see a Psch. or Dr. with knowledge of this evil drug and definitely more options than I.

I was one of many who went cold turkey over 2 1/2 years ago and spent one year in hell.  There are others here who will offer their advice, so please feel free to ask whatever questions you may have - we are here for you!

Liz
